Altec Lansing 5100 Series Speaker System

I very happy to have the chance to try out these speakers as we have had such great feedback from our other Altec Lansing reviews. The Altec Lansing 5100 is a six speaker (5.1) system that really rocks! I tested the system with both games and DVD sources in a small room enviroment with the speakers situated in all four corners of the room as well as the center speaker directly in front of me under my monitor stand. The Sub-Woofer was placed on the floor directly in front of me as well.

The sound card was just a stock card capable of 6 six channel configuration and nothing high end. The reason I mention that the sound card was just a stock onboard card is that I can now say that I know the incredible sound from those speakers were all the work of the speakers and not enhanced by special sound cards. I can only imagine what the sound would be like with a higher end sound card.

One of the things I appreciated more on this set than a set I did earlier was the fact that the speaker wires were indeed long enough to reach around the walls rather than trying to run wires and under carpets and such to get the rear speakers placed in a desirable position. Until now I have only tested or used speaker systems with the volume controls and settings directly on one of the speakers and never thought much of it. The Altec Lansing 5100 Series system has a wired remote in which all of the controls are accessible from. This is actually a huge bonus as it leaves the user with more options as to where speakers can be placed and yet have great access to it's controls.

The system is designed for total connectivity to video gaming systems, portable CD players, MP3 players, PCs and other audio sources. The speaker wires are all color coded for easy hook up as well.

At first glance you would never know by looking at the speakers that they could pump out such large sound based on their small size. The speakers bases are built of sturdy alloy and very solid and stable.

I don't know a lot about the actual technical specs, but who really needs to anyway, right? As long as it sounds as great as these speakers it doesn't really matter. But if you do need the specs, here they are ...

-73 Watts Total Continuous Power RMS (4x7 W/Satellites; 22.5 W/Center; 22.5 W/Sub)
-100 Watts Total Peak Power
-Ported, Dual Subwoofer Drivers
-6-Speaker Surround
-High Performance Micro Drivers
-Full-Function Digital Controller
-Headphone Jack
-Auxiliary Input Jack
-Total Connectivity
-Tri-Mode Selector
-Cast Alloy Stands
-Color-Coded Cables
