  Madden 2002
"NFLâ„¢ football is back, and so is Madden! For the 12th year in a row, Madden NFL Football brings the realism of the pro gridiron right to your fingertips. With all the teams, players, and features that you've come to know and love, Madden puts you right on the field with the big hitters!" - EA Sports

Well, I can't say as I am much of a gamer when it comes to these console games, but I I can say I am a big football fan. So, given the chance to try out this new Madden version, how could I resist. I had just recently played a bit with the 2001 version of the game so it's new improvements were easy for me to pick out. The new faces and uniforms on PS2 look great. Each player has his own identity and the details is so fine you can actually see the mesh on the jerseys. It's easily the best-looking football game I've ever witnessed. They've added things like the Two-Minute Drill (which is a blast for you armchair QB's out there), a Training Mode, Franchise expansion in Franchise mode, new cheerleader cards and new game modes like tournament and custom league. Most important though, they've worked on and tuned the already fantastic gameplay. The PS2, Gamecube and Xbox use the new 2002 game engine.

The graphics on the PS2 are amazing. A large memory card is useful, because Madden 2002 has the capability to track stats that have never been tracked before. They shot a lot more motion-capture to create the new moves in the game. One of the biggest complaints by users in the previous versions was the unusual amount of one handed catches. One-handed catches have been turned way down, and the users will see tons of new catches, wrap tackles and TD celebrations.Another feature that has been improved is the Coaches Challenge rule in the NFL. In the previous version this was done at random by the game program. In the 2002 version, players can challenge any call they wish. I actually got to try it one time.

Of course there are little built in secrets and cheats. With Madden Cards you are virtually guaranteed there are a lot of secret codes, stadiums, teams, and cheats. There are over 300 cards available and each card does something. You earn cards by doing tasks in-game, the tasks earn tokens, and you use tokens to buy cards. You can almost compare these tokens and cards to performance bonuses in a players salary. Once I learned what the Madden Cards were and how to get them, I was almost more preoccupied in trying to btain these than I was at actually defeating my opponent. Consider it a "Game within the game".

As I mentioned earlier, I am not a person who can sit there and play video games that much - but I can now say that I am "Mad about Madden!". This is one fantastic game and provided even this casual game player hours of a much needed football fix.

"Play a full season with your favorite team and take them to the Super Bowl, or try the franchise mode and build a dynasty. You can even create teams and players so you can start from scratch! With all-new realistic player animations, Madden Cards, a training mode, and the Two-Minute Drill, Madden truly has it all! " - EA Sports
