Build Your Own Database Driven Website
Together, PHP and MySQL form the most widely used open source database and scripting technologies on the Web today. As a budding Web developer, you need to learn and master PHP and MySQL. Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL is a hands-on guide to learning all the tools, principles, and techniques needed to build a fully functional database-driven Web site using PHP and MySQL.

This is the first time I have had the opportunity to review a Sitepoint book and I can say that for a book of only 350 pages it does pack a lot of useful information it. I found the information within to be right to the point and more informative than some books with twice the number of pages.

The book covers everything from installing PHP and MySQL on a server wether it be Windows or Linux based, to creating live content management back-ends and websites. I have seen many books where any sample code is provided to you in one long block for you to decipher and try to follow. This book breaks down the code into smaller bits and explains what each part of the code does. This I found was a great way to present code and SQL statements to new programmers. All of the sample code is also available to download on the sitepoint website.

You will also find some useful information ons some of the more advanced areas of PHP and MySQL programming with sections detailing how to use cookies and session variables in your code and advanced data handling. There is, and what I have even referred to myself on occasion, is a couple of very handy quick-reference guides on PHP and MySQL syntax, functions and data types.

Some of the SQL statements were not done in an as practical way as you would do in real life but for beginners the statements do work and do provide a good working knowledge should the reader want to follow up on those subjects in a more advanced manual. I use the term manual here but in fact this book is primarily more of a tutorial book explaning how to do things rather than a reference guide.

I'd recommend that if you are to get a start in PHP and MySQL programming on your own to get this book first and then move on to more technically advanced guides. The examples in the book are great real world samples that are commonly used in most web applications and that alone makes the book worth its already affordable price.
