  Learning PHP 5
OVERVIEW
If you've wanted to try your hand at PHP but haven't known where to start, then Learning PHP 5 is the book you need. If you've wanted to try your hand at PHP but haven't known where to start, then Learning PHP 5 is the book you need. With attention to both PHP 4 and the new PHP version 5, it provides everything from an explanation of how PHP works with your web server and web browser to the ins and outs of working with databases and HTML forms.

REVIEW
Learning PHP 5 is a very neatly put together 'text book' style book. Each section is nicely laid out in a logical order with an introduction, lessons, summaries and excercises. I'd suggest actually doing the lessons in order to get full value out of the book. They are very well done if used as practice excercises, but may be a bit do tutorial-like to be used as a simple reference.

Learning PHP 5 covers the following topics, and more:

- How PHP works with your web browser and web server
- PHP language basics, including data, variables, logic and looping
- Working with arrays and functions
- Making web forms
- Working with databases like MySQL
- Remembering users with sessions
- Parsing and generating XML
- Debugging

SUMMARY
What? No downloadable code examples? There is no mention anywhere in the book or O'Reilly's website about downloading the sample codes. This is by far the books major mistake. Some of the examples are very long and would take a considerable amount of time to type it all in - even longer if you happen to have a typo. I have to dock a couple points for that.

Also the book claims to be a good place to start for learning PHP yet, to quote from the back of the book; "... this book is for intelligent (but not necessarily technical) readers". Although the book does a fantastic job of explaining the procedures in near simple english, don't expect to pick it up and start programming as a beginner. You will need some basic knowledge on website design and coding.
