  MySQL Tutorial
Book: MySQL Tutorial
Luke Welling and Laura Thomson

OVERVIEW
A concise introduction to the fundamentals of working with MySQL.

REVIEW
MySQL is an open-source relational database management system that is rapidly growing in popularity. Known for its speed, reliability, and ease of use, MySQL has proven itself to be particularly well suited both for beginners and for experienced developers to create sophisticated database-backed Web sites and applications.

MySQL Tutorial is an easy to use introduction to the basic concepts and techniques of working with MySQL. It teaches the beginning MySQL user how to create and administer powerful databases that can be used at home, at work, and on the Web. Its not one of the biggest books you will find on MySQL with only 246 pages, but the information provided did touch on all the areas a new MySQL user needs to know.

I like the fact that it was done in a textbook-style format with chapters and review questions at the end of each chapter. I found that to be a good guide to wether or not what I read had sunk in as well as providing a good quick summary of what was covered in the chapter.

This book assumes some familiarity with the basics of databases, and knowledge of some web application language with which you can write your queries.

Its a nice overview of MySQL's capabilites and quirks. After reading the first few chapters I am more convinced than before that MySQL is the best database choice for all but the largest, most critical applications.

SUMMARY
If you're an experienced techie and you want the heavy details on MySQL, you may want to pass and grab a higher level publication. If you want a nice introduction and instructions on how to work with basic queries, try this book. For someone that has had limited MySQL experience until recently, this book helped flatten the MySQL learning curve.
